چکیده

A precise radiometric calibration of the measured spectra is essential for a good quality of the trace gas retrievals. In order to ensure a high radiometric accuracy, a calibration scenario has to be developed that meets the tradeoff between data quality and the necessary measurement time. Furthermore the radiometric calibration requires an accurate instrument characterisation. This presentation will discuss the instrument behaviour, especially the radiometric stability. Furthermore, systematic differences between measurements in different sweep directions of the interferometer will be addressed. These effects have been carefully analysed, and under nominal conditions, they do not have a significant impact on the quality of the retrieved trace gas profiles. Another crucial issue that will be discussed is the detector non-linearity, which needs to be characterised precisely in order to be properly corrected. A comparison between on-ground and in-flight characterisation measurements has shown a generally good agreement.

Spectral Characterisation and Calibration of Mipas

RESUME The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) forms part of the atmospheric payload on board ESA's polar orbiting Envisat, launched on 1 March 2002. The Calibration & Validation phase comprises various special calibration measurements. There is a focus on radiometric and spectral characterisation, as well as the line-of-sight pointing accuracy. This paper deals wi...

Precision validation of MIPAS-Envisat products

This paper discusses the variation and validation of the precision, or estimated random error, associated with the ESA Level 2 products from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS). This quantity represents the propagation of the radiometric noise from the spectra through the retrieval process into the Level 2 profile values. The noise itself varies with time, stea...

MIPAS Level 1B algorithms overview: operational processing and characterization

This paper gives an overview of the MIPAS Level 1B (L1B) processor whose main objective is to calibrate atmospheric measurements radiometrically, spectrally and geo-located. It presents also the results of instrument characterization done on ground and during the first years inflight. An accurate calibration is mandatory for high quality atmospheric retrievals. MIPAS has shown very good perform...

Mipas Observations of Clouds and Their Effects on Level 2 Trace Gas Products

The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument measures the intensity of atmospheric radiation emitted in the infra-red spectral region at high spectral resolution in five bands ranging from 685 cm to 2410 cm. Clouds affect the appearance of the measured spectra at all wavelengths which are sensitive to emission from the layer of atmosphere containing the cloud...
